Az Északi-sark térsége az elmúlt évek során egyre jobban felértékelődött. Az utóbbi évtizedekben végbemenő globális felmelegedés nagyban hozzájárult ahhoz, hogy a térségre nagyobb nemzetközi figyelem összpontosuljon. Számos ország érdeklődik a jég alatt rejlő ásványkincsek iránt – céljuk elsősorban a részesedésszerzés –, azonban nemcsak a kőolaj és földgázkitermelés jelenthet kihívást az érintett államok számára, hanem az északi hajózási útvonalak biztosítása és ellenőrzése is. Megjelentek az olyan jelentős tengeri hatalmak, mint az Amerikai Egyesült Államok és az Oroszországi Föderáció, de jelen van a térségben Kanada és Izland is, valamint az északi államok, amelyek minél nagyobb befolyást akarnak szerezni a térségben, ezáltal a térség geopolitikai játszmák színterévé vált.
