Az egyre gyakrabban alkalmazott aszimmetrikus hadviselés területén a különleges műveleti erők fontos szerepet játszanak. A feladatvégrehajtás gyakran nehéz terepen és olyan helyszíneken zajlik, ahol nincs lehetőség a megfelelő katonai logisztikai lánc kialakítására. Ilyenkor az erőknek a helyi erőforrásokra kell támaszkodniuk, amely arra ösztönzi a gyártókat, hogy olyan járműveket készítsenek, amelyek alkatrészei kompatibilisek a használt polgári járművekkel.
