The “newspace” explosion in the 2010s enabled access to space systems and services as we have never seen before. A productive business sector grew out of the educational and research applications. The micro- and nanosatellites, regarded earlier as techno-curiosities or at most testing platforms, are nowadays being launched by the hundreds every year, to support lucrative business activities. The governmental space activities reacted slower to this change. However, the miniaturized space vehicles are now present in the military space systems even of the greatest spacefaring nations. This study presents the properties of micro- and nanosatellites, their components and possible payloads, and the peculiarities of their launch.
