Abstract

World War I, often referred to as “the war to end all wars,” brought a dozen of technical innovations that changed the characteristic of the warfare forever. It was the war in which tanks, submarines, planes, flamethrowers, and the silent killer of the trenches, the chemical weapon appeared in the battlefield. The threat of massive deployment of war gases was met by an evolving array of defensive countermeasures. To achieve protection against war gases a new special branch was born: the chemical defense service.
