Abstract

Many astronomical instruments are designed to work in space, where they can do observations without the disturbing effect of the terrestrial atmosphere. In this paper we review the most important astronomical space telescopes that work in the visible, ultraviolet, and infrared parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. We describe their structure, operations, instruments, most important goals, and scientific results. We briefly discuss the interaction between civil and military science regarding space technology.
