The Hofherr company in the service of the army

Abstract

In 1869, Mátyás Hofherr established his own company in Vienna under the name „M. Hofherr”, which manufactured agricultural machinery. A decade later, the Hofherr-Schrantz-Clayton-Shuttleworth Hungarian Machine Works Ltd. was established by the purchase of some divisions of the British Clayton factory. During World War I, in order to meet the various needs of the army and to ensure the supply of war material, the factory became involved in the production of war material and manufactured various transport equipment and equipment in accordance with orders. The author’s study chronologically traces and describes the most significant developments at the plant. It also covers the period of the Second World War and the post-nationalisation period.
