Brigadier General József Koller PhD received his military education in Hungary and in several foreign countries, graduating with distinction in 1989.
His first assignment was at the Bakony Combat Helicopter Wing as co-pilot/gunner, then as pilot-in-command. In addition to working he studied languages, and got a degree in Security and Defence Policy at the Zrínyi Miklós National Defence University.
He was awarded the Master’s Certificate in International Military-Strategic Studies at the Advanced Joint Staff Officers’ Course in Italy, and parallel with this title of Armed Forces Legal Adviser at the Faculty of International Humanitarian Law and Military Operations.
He attended the Doctoral School of Military Sciences in the National University of Public Service (NUPS), and in 2013 he received his PhD in Military Science “Summa Cum Laude”. In 2019 he was awarded the title of Honorary Associate Professor.
He made good use of his mission experiences acquired in Afghanistan at the Joint Force Command (JFC), then at the HDF General Staff as Head of Air Force Department. It was under his professional leadership that, among others the national concept for training pilots was developed, the AS-350 helicopters entered service, the procurement of the new training aeroplanes and training helicopters was launched, and other modernisations, developments concerning the air force were made.
From 16th August, 2016 he fills the position of Base Commander, Garrison Commander of the HDF 86th Szolnok Helicopter Base. His goal is by using his professional expertise and knowledge to enhance the domestic and international prestige of the HDF 86th Szolnok Helicopter Base and the Szolnok Garrison, along with that of the Hungarian Air Force and the Hungarian Defence Forces.
