Col (Ret) László Nagy CSc

Col (Ret) László Nagy DSc was admitted to the personnel of the professional official corps in 1967, after his graduation as an engineer. He served in the Central Signal Equipment’s Repair Plant, in the MoD Signal Directorate, then in the MoD Foreign Affairs Department. From 1977 he was assigned to the 2nd Directorate of the General Staff. From 1989 he held the post of the military attaché in Helsinki, and from 1991 he was the leading researcher and the Deputy Director of the Institute for Strategic and Defence Studies.

In 1997 he retired, and from 1998 he became the associate professor at the Security Studies Department of the Zrínyi Miklós National Defence University. Between 2004 and 2007 he was the head of the department.

In 1989 he defended his thesis in the topic of military sciences, and received the candidate of military sciences (CSc), i.e. the equivalent PhD degree.

Since 1997 he has been continuously a member of the editorial board of the Honvédségi Szemle, earlier titled Új Honvédségi Szemle.

In 1994 he was elected to one of the Deputy Chairpersons, then in 1998 to the Vice Chairman of the Hungarian Association of Military Science (MHTT). Between 2004 and 2016 he held the position of the Chairman of the Association. From 1998-2004 he was the Chairman of the editorial board of the journal titled Hadtudomány. László Nagy is the expert of MHTT; his field of research is security policy.

In February 1997 he obtained habilitation at the Zrínyi Miklós National Defence University. On basis of the competition of the years 1998-1999 he conducted research at the Groningen University, the Netherlands, in the subject of the Visegrád countries’ security concepts.

In 2002 he defended his academic dissertation again in the topic of military science, and in 2003 he became the doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA).

Since 2011 he is a member of the Committee on Military Science of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. From March 2016 he participated – as a non-academic member of a public body – for three years in the work of the MTA’s Section of Economics and Law.
